Bailey Funeral Today

The funeral for Toby Bailey takes place today: he's the 20 year-old who was shot, apparently accidentally, late last week in the Bethel Midtown Village in Athens: an 18 year-old friend is facing charges in the case. Services for Bailey are set for 2 o'clock this afternoon at the New Grove Baptist Church.

A candidate to be the next Dean of Students at the University of Georgia is on campus today: Mary Beth Mercatoris is an assistant dean at the University of Texas. She'll meet with UGa faculty, staff, and students this afternoon in the Tate Center.

Adams: No Layoffs, Furloughs, at Least for Now

University of Georgia President Michael Adams says there will likely be no layoffs or furloughs at UGa, at least through the end of the year: Dr. Adams says the University continues to struggle with state-mandated budget cuts, but he says the tuition increases approved by the state Board of Regents have actually allowed UGa to add some faculty positions, filling jobs that were lost to previous budget cuts.

Kemp Speaks to UGa GOP

Secretary of State Brian Kemp is scheduled to speak to the University of Georgia's College Republicans, 7 o'clock tonight at UGa's Miller Learning Center. Republican Kemp--a former Athens state Senator--was appointed to the Secretary of State's office back in January, filling the unexpired term of Karen Handel, who resigned to run for Governor. Kemp is seeking the job full-time. He'll face Democrat Georganna Sinkfield in the November 2 election.

Judge Hears Arguments in Noise Case

Clarke County Superior Court Judge Steve Jones heard arguments in an appeal of a guilty verdict in the case of a University of Georgia student convicted of violating the Athens-Clarke County noise ordinance. Judge Jones did not issue a ruling in the case after Monday's hearing. Student Ian Grady was fined $350 for violating the ordinance in April of last year, when he held a loud party at his downtown apartment. Grady's lawyer says the ordinance is unconstitutional.

UGa Names Interim Dean

The University of Georgia names an interim dean for UGa's College of Family and Consumer Sciences: Anna Sweaney is a department head in the college. She'll take over for former dean Laura Jolly, who is now the University's vice-president for instruction. Arthur Horne is dean of UGa's College of Education: he'll chair a search committee to find Jolly's full-time replacement.

The case stems from a citation issued to a University of Georgia student in his downtown apartment last year.
