PETA: Replace UGA VII With a Robot

People for Ethical Treatment of Animals has a suggestion for the University of Georgia, which is looking for a replacement for Uga VII, the Georgia Bulldog mascot who died last week in Savannah: PETA says the University should use what it calls an "animatronic dog," or use a person in a costume. PETA has sent its suggestion via e-mail to University of Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans. The PETA e-mail follows...

In the wake of the untimely death of the University of Georgia's (UGA) bulldog mascot, Uga VII, PETA has asked the school's athletic director, Damon M. Evans, to replace the mascot with an animatronic dog--or to rely solely on a costumed mascot--instead of using another real bulldog. Bulldogs are prone to breathing difficulties, hip dysplasia, heart disorders, and other congenital ailments, and acquiring a dog from a breeder perpetuates the animal overpopulation crisis while causing another dog waiting in an animal shelter to be condemned to death.

"It is time for the university to put an end to the cycle of suffering endured by dogs who are brought into the world solely to represent the school's 'brand'," says PETA Assistant Director Kristie Phelps. "By choosing a humane alternative to the use of live animals as school mascots, UGA can show that compassion always wins."

What others are saying

  • WTF
all i can say is WTF
  • treatment
if you research it the dawgs that georgia uses are not mistreated at all, they are given a nice home, and walked everyday, no mis treatment whatsoever
  • extermination
I don't know how many people know this, so I fell obliged to spread the word: PETA wants all of your pets DEAD. They believe that all pets suffer and the only way to end that is through the mass extermination of all pets.
  • PETA
I see the future ah yes it is filled with happy children and pet owners playing with robot dogs! What will the real dogs be then, extinct????
  • PETA
Uga livs a very wonderful safe life and is not mistreated! Check it out. Go Dawgs!
  • UGA Mascot
Why not search the Bulldog Rescues around the country and save an animal that might eventually have to be "put down"
  • flawed logic
The robot mascot will not stop the breeding of bulldogs and UGA is not going to change their mascot, so why not let at least one bulldog be happy since he is treated like royalty and cared for like the Pope. They also have a great veterinary school and every student will be his friend at Georgia so I think the next UGA would be more than willing (if dogs could talk).
  • bulldog
Don't feel bad. They took away our Colonel Rebel and we are winning without him. So you can live without him as we do without Col. Rebel.
  • Screw PETA
don't they have anyting else better to do then try to convince people to use robot dogs as mascots. Uga has been a big part of Georgia's team for years and now they're going to try and change that because Uga VII died. It's outrageous to even think about
  • What are they thinking about?
I'm a big UGA fan. The bulldog is a big part of the family. Just becasue Uga VII died, does not mean that the care taker is not doing their job. If you really look at it we all will die some day. So don't try to take our real life bulldog away from us. I like having my picture taking with the bulldog to start the season off.
  • PETA...Get A Life
I am a Georgian but not really a fan....however I have had two English Bulldogs who have been fortunate to have great home lives. PETA....ya just don't get it....UGA as with my pups are well maintained and have a great life....how about looking at child abuse or something that really matters not a Bulldog in a red sweater.
  • UGA
Im an LSU FAn and we have a tiger as our mascot i dare PETA to try to stop us from having a tiger. UGA is a statement to what the bulldogs really are a great team with a mean attitude. PETA just needs to back down and go to what they do best which is nothing. And if theres any PETS fans readin this i got to go and shot my dog since he broke his leg. he is know usless for huntin.
  • Like everyone else here, I think PETA is a money-grubbing, headline-grabbing, animal-killing, human-hating, veggie-worshiping, left wing group of narcissistic butt-holes. And that's the good points! Screw PETA with a carrot! Not one of their members could ever qualify for a sports team, unless it's varsity knitting! Long live UGO VIII! And may he pee all over PETA's leg!
  • I think that buying from a breeder is good because it influences people to not have their animals have babies because they are not show quality. In Japan, all the animals you see are purebred, and the fact that it is so predominate, limits the amount of poorly bred and stray animals because people only want purebreds, and stray cats are mostly animals that some person decided to have their animal have babies. If only purebred animals have offspring, the problem would be solved.
  • PETA
Obviously PETA cares nothing about humans, because the suggestion that a human in an animal suit would be better, shows they have never worn one of these costumes. Mascot suits are hot, uncomfortable and not exactly tha most sanitary either. I'm sure they much rather a human be in discomfort, than see an animal be treated well and live a pampered life. PETA is and always has been, full of crackpots who live in the land of fairytales, with no regard for anyone but themselves.
  • Great...so they're trying to replace a lovable and well-cared for animal with a cold, emotionless Techno Puppy.
  • I don't think you guys are reading the entire message...
The idea of a "robot" for a mascot may be silly, but I think a lot of people are missing the point here. There is no doubt that the bull dog used as UGA's mascot is treated exceptionally well, just as many pure bred dogs are very well taken care of by their owners. The point being made is that every time someone buys from a breeder, that is one less home for an animal in a shelter who will be killed because it is homeless. If UGA is unwilling to settle on having a human mascot like everyone else, then maybe they should consider adopting from a shelter since pure breds do come through them as well.
  • PAI
I am forming a new organization called People against idiots. This organization will go after people like this. Yes, I called the members of PETA idiots. Get a job and take a shower.
  • UGA
Hey PETA... I love animals too. They're delicious. Don't worry new Uga your safe.
  • PETA
Since PETA does not want to " Use animals as brands." does that mean that they will protest and boycott the United States for having a Bald Eagle as a "Brand"? Or each individual state for having a state bird, dog, reptile, bug? Afte all isn't that "using a animal as a brand"
  • What PETA really stands for
People for the Eating of Tasty Animals
  • Peta
I understand were they are coming from. Bulldogs have health issues, but it's not every bulldog. I also think that before they start with commenting and asking that they should take some consideration into the fact that the dog is very well pampered. Come on now how many doghouses do you see were they have their own A.C. Not to mention it just wouldn't be the same with a robodog. It's a part of the school and a tradition. I think it should be left alone. Uga is always the most beautiful bulldog and very well cared for I am sure of it. It is best just to leave it the way it is.
  • Peta
Peta is a bunch of annoying liberals that are FREAKS and don't understand anlything about the environment and animals like they think they do! Think about hunting... it needs to occur or the animals will die of disease or starveation. Back to my point, why do they want to change an old and great tradition. What do they have against a real dog? That it is going to die... that is the circle of life.
  • Peta
Are all members of PETA Vegetarians? If not, then shut up
  • PETA
This is one of the stupidest things i have ever heard...PETA really?then what about Bevo at texas should they get a robot bull? or the horse at Florida State? these are all of what makes college football so great and now PETA wants to take them away for dumb reasons its stupid
  • STUPID
So, mabye lsu should get a robot tiger, and auburn a robot flying eagle. his is retarted, get a life peta. and GEAUX TIGERS
  • PETA
PETA is only concerned with the bulldog. Not the school. Realize that it's a matter of equality and once we put ourselves above all others we will fail. What's wrong with a human mascot? It's stupid to think the school would be destroyed if it's not represented by an animal.
  • PETA
Personally I'm a Sooner fan living in Texas, but a robot dog. That has to be one of the dumbiest ideas I've ever heard. Like so many people said, he will be treated better than most dogs will ever be treated. PETA people really need to get a life. Remember when you had Free Willy, the whale, turned loose. He was so lonely that he died within the year. That was really humane. Like I said get a life.
  • UGA
Come on, really? PETA has to get involved in this? Every Uga has probably lived a better quality of life than most humans, being pampered and adored by so many people. With all the other animals that are suffering in the shelters as a result of human stupidity (those who won't spay and neuter their pets, and then let them roam around, get sick, hurt, killed), this is the cause that PETA chooses to champion? Unless PETA is going to volunteer to suit their people up in the Uga suit for "humane animal treatment's" sake, I'd rather they find somewhere else to focus their attention. RIP Uga VII.
  • Robot Dog to Rlace Real One
I think PETA is stupid. The real dog mascot most likely lives the life that would be envied by any other dog alive. Don't cave in to PETA. Get a real one!
  • PETA
Morons. PETA is an organization of morons.
  • Dog
No wonder our society has so many problems: inhumanity is probably related to selfish behavior. Selfish behavior gets us nowhere. Why bash an organization trying to make a positive difference in this world? It makes sense, so why not try to see the other side? Humanity doesn't progress if our lives remain status quo. PETA has a point, and it's related to progress. It's a model of selflessness that most likely we can learn as a lesson toward increasing humane behavior. This moves us in a positive direction.
  • dog
This dog is an icon his blood line is fanned by my father and children this is a dumb idea. with our recent losses the dog holds us together. its go dogs not go robot
  • PETA
PETA may hav a point here. Since Bulldogs have problems with breathing difficulties, hip dysplasia, heart problems, and the like, maybe they should ALL be humainly destroyed, (to prevent their possible suffering). While we're at it, maybe all pure bred animals who have a tendancy to have genetic problems should be put down!
I, personally, feel it would be a lot more humane and simpler to just gag and neuter all the PETA people and let them go the way of the Dodo Bird.
  • UGA VIII
Sorry to hear about UGA, but we all have to go sometime. Maybe one of the bozos at PETA will volunteer for the job. No would call that abuse.
  • PETA
Bump PETA, It's just a matter of picking out UGA VIII. These Dawgs are smarter than any Tech grad.
  • P E T A
You people are idiots......claiming that the university is perpetuating a cycle of suffering endured by dogs? This dog,and mascot is better treated than most animals out there, as well as probably more beloved than even Santa Claus. Next time you hug a tree I hope you get a splinter.
  • WTF!!
Is this a Joke? The tradition and history of SEC football is not to be messed with. If UGA and the rest of us all failed to acquire a new Bulldog wouldn't that result in the extinction of the breed. I'm an Auburn fan and would be embarassed to play UGA without the real mascot! Go DAWGS!!
  • THWUGA
After this football season, UGA will probably not be able to afford a bulldog anyway. Just adopt one from the pound, suckers.

    Go Jackets!
  • Really?
PETA please go away. No one cares about your cause! You all are, to put it nicely, Fucking sissy whiners that need to find some other way to help the world! Now I am going to kill a dolphin!
  • PETA
PETA needs to do their research before they condem how our beloved bulldos are treated and what responsible breeders the Seilys are. Find an animal cause that really needs your help.
  • PETA fails yet again.
The bulldog that UGA gets to replace the old one will probably have one of the best lives for a dog and be taken care of extremely well. Breeders will continue to breed, and buyers will continue to buy. If anything, giving one of the dogs a better life is helping their cause more so than hurting it. Yet they think that simply not acquiring a new dog will help the overall suffering of animals.

    >_<
  • PETA is stupid.
Don't cave into peta. Peta is stupid.

    I Love UGA.

    LONG LIVE UGA VIII!
  • AWESOME
If they did replace uga with an animatronic model...they'd have to get someone from GEORGIA TECH to design and build it. U[sic]GA "graduates" can't even spell 'dog' correctly...
  • Stupid
That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard in my life. PETA is retarded. The dogs are going to bred no matter what, next auburn is going to have a robotic eagle flying from their stadium.
  • PETA, you are dumb.
These Bulldogs aren't bread for a "brand". These bulldogs are the Seiler's personal pets, they just also happen to be the University of Georgia's mascot. Before issuing press statements like these, please stop and RTFM.
  • Georgia Robots
Some how, "GO GEORGIA ROBOTS !!" does not work for me.
  • UGA
PETA what are you thinking about. Get yourself out of the business of the University of Georgia. Hate to say it but I haven't stopped laughing at your ridiculous idea.
  • Uga
Wow. The folks at PETA obviously haven't looked into the life that a UGA mascot leads. I've worked at a venue where Uga would make appearances - his rider reads like a rock star. I wish I got a 15 minute break every hour to go lie on a bag of ice.
  • mascot
    "PETA PEOPLE"......GET A LIFE!
  • Uga VII and PETA
Idiots! First, if you're looking to be compassionate towards animals why wouldn't you want a dog to be revered and WELL taken care of as the UGA mascots have been?
Second, I would respect PETA's position if they left it at "don't use animals as brands", but to suggest that UGA switch to a robot is just stupid. Just dumb. And you wonder why so many people have marginalized PETA...
Third, Uga isn't obtained from a "breeder" per se. Get your facts straight. There is no bulldog overpopulation here.
