Student Employment Fair at UGa

A student employment fair is on tap for today at UGa. The fair, sponsored by the University of Georgia's Career Center, runs from 11 til 3 at the Tate Center. On-campus departments will be represented, as will several other employers from the Athens area.

Today is orientation day at UGa, with University of Georgia students gearing up for next Monday's first day of fall semester classes. Orientation activities get underway at 8 o'clock this morning in the Tate Student Center. UGa's Graduate School orientation starts at 9 at the Classic Center.

Athens Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies are set for this evening, taking place this year at the University of Georgia. There are a dozen new inductees, two of whom are going into the Hall posthumously. The festivities begin at 6 o'clock at the Tate Center.

Another candidate to be the next Dean of Students at UGa is on campus today: Michele Howard is an associate vice chancellor at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. She'll meet with University of Georgia students, staff, and faculty in forums that get underway at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the Tate Center.


New Hall of Fame Class in Athens

A dozen inductees will comprise this year's class in the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame: the induction banquet is set for May 17 in the Tate Center at the University of Georgia. The newest members of the Hall are Frank Bush, Jerry Cash, Bolling DuBose, Lynn McDermott, Chip McGinley, and Griffin Moody; also Alex Paterson, Bobby Poss, Mack Sewell, and Carmen Sheppard. Inducted posthumously will be Julius Bishop and Jerry Nunnally.

Another candidate to be the University of Georgia's next Dean of Students is on campus today: Joyce Ester is an assistant vice-president at Cal State in Fresno. She'll meet with UGa faculty, staff, and students in afternoon forums in the Tate Center.

Several Earth Day activities are taking place today at UGa: Athens-area auto dealers are showing hybrid cars from 10 til 2 at the Memorial Hall Plaza. A ceremony recognizing the Tate Student Center's LEED Certification is set for 4:30 this afternoon. And the University of Georgia's Georgia Review magazine holds its second annual Earth Day celebration, 5:30 this afternoon at the State Botanical Garden.

Dance Marathon at UGa

What is billed as the largest student-run fundraiser on the University of Georgia campus is set for this weekend: the annual Dance Marathon raises money for Children's Health Care of Atlanta. It starts at 10 o'clock Saturday morning and continues through 10 o'clock Sunday morning, this year in the Grand Hall at the Tate Student Center.

Today is a back to school day in Athens: Clarke County school district students are returning to class after their holiday breaks. Today is the last day of Fall Semester classes at the University of Georgia. Final exams begin Wednesday, with Fall Semester commencement exercises set for December 18. Today is also the last day for free H1N1 vaccinations for University of Georgia students: the shots and nasal mist vaccines for Swine Flu are available from 10 til 3 at the Tate Student Center.

The University of Georgia Health Center offers H1N1 flu vaccinations this week: shots and nasal spray will be available tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday at the Health Center and for two days next week at the Tate Center. The swine flu vaccines are for University students, their spouses, and their family members, with priority status for children, pregnant women, and health care providers.

A Pulitzer Prize winning poet is on campus today: Rita Dove is a former U.S. Poet Laureate. She'll sign books and speak in a 3:30 session at the University of Georgia's Tate Student Center. She'll also read from her works, 7 o'clock tonight at the Morton Theatre.

Saturday is Legislative Day at UGa, with a pre-game reception for Georgia lawmakers and other state government leaders set for 1:30 at the Tate Center. That's just a couple hours before the Georgia Bulldogs kick off against the 4th ranked LSU Tigers in a crucial SEC contest in Sanford Stadium.
