The 32 year-old is wanted in at least two recent home invasion robberies, one on Gaines School Road, the other at Chateau Court.

Athens-Clarke County Police say the 20 year-old University of Georgia student who falsely claimed she was raped will not be charged with the false reporting of a crime. The woman told police she was sexually assaulted in a restroom at a downtown bar. Police say bar surveillance tapes discredited her story of what happened earlier this week.

A student at Cedar Shoals High School is in hot water with school officials, and with Athens-Clarke County Police: the school principal, in an e-mail to parents of Cedar Shoals students, says the student brough an unloaded gun to school, apparently to show it to classmates, one of whom tipped off school authorities. Police were called. The student--and the gun--were removed from campus.

Athens-Clarke County Police are investigating two reported sexual assaults. A 17 year-old tells police she was drinking at a party on Athens' east side: she says she was raped after passing out. She was treated at St. Mary's Hospital. A 20 year-old who was treated at Athens Regional Medical Center says she was raped at a bar on Broad Street.

Athens-Clarke County Police have a homicide on their hands: they say 26 year-old Candie Scott is charged in the Tuesday stabbing death of 27 year-old Candice Armour, who was killed in a home on Big Oak Circle in southeast Athens. Police investigators say the stabbing appears to have been the end result of a domestic dispute.

Athens-Clarke County Police say it's another case of con artists targeting an elderly victim: an 85 year-old man tells police he responded to notices stating he'd won millions of dollars. The notices instructed him to wire various amounts of money to cover what the flim-flammers said were taxes and fees. He says he did just that earlier this month, losing more than $16,000. Athens Police investigators issue the usual advisory: they say if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

He told Athens-Clarke County Police he was robbed at knifepoint by 3 men in a Sunday hold-up at a convenience store on North Avenue: now those police are charging Michael Reed with the false report of a crime. Investigators say Reed made up his story and they say no robbery occurred.

Athens-Clarke County Police report the arrest of a shooting suspect, a Jackson County woman who fired shots into a vehicle at a Mexican restaurant on Atlanta Highway. It happened Wednesday afternoon: police say Susan Spence fired two shots at the car of a Winterville man with whom she had argued in the restaurant parking lot. He was not injured. Spence, 54, from Jefferson, faces aggravated assault charges. She's also looking at a DUI charge.

Athens-Clarke County Police say a medical condition caused a driver to swerve off Gaines School Road this morning. The car slammed into a building that houses a credit union, resulting in what Police say were minor injuries to the driver of the car and to one worker in the credit union. The Police investigation is ongoing.

Athens-Clarke County Police say an elderly woman has fallen victim to a telephone scam: the 74 year-old woman tells police she received a call from a man who claimed to be a police officer in Quebec, saying he had a relative of the woman in the custody of drug agents. The caller told the Athens woman she needed to wire $3,400 to a bondsman in Spain. She did; police say she shouldn't have.

Murder suspect Richard Norred had a Thursday bond hearing in Athens: a Clarke County magistrate denied bond for the man accused in last month's shootings of his two sisters and his mother. One of his sisters was killed, the other two women were wounded in the shootings at the family's home off Red Fox Run in southeast Athens. Athens-Clarke County Police say Norred shot and wounded himself in a failed suicide attempt in the April 20 shooting rampage.

(AP) Athens-Clarke County police say a utilities worker found a fetus at a wastewater treatment plant. Police say the fetus was found  Monday in the waste bin of a machine that traps trash from sewers as the water arrives at the plant. .Police say they don't know where the fetus came from or how long it had been in the sewers. The say emergency workers estimate the development at 3 months. Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson says there's no way to tell where the fetus came from because a large section of the city is serviced by the treatment plant.

Athens-Clarke County Police say 28 year-old Richard Norred shot and killed his 29 year-old sister Lee Pope and shot and wounded two other family members: a 31 year-old sister and his 63 year-old mother. It happened Tuesday afternoon at a home off Red Fox Run in southeast Athens. Police say Norred, who apparently suffers from a type of autism and has a history of violent tendencies, then shot himself in the chest with a .380 caliber handgun. He, like his surviving sister and mother, was taken to an Athens hospital with what Athens Police described as severe injuries. An infant and a 4 year-old were in the home at the time of the shootings. Police say they were not injured.

 Athens-Clarke County Police say the men implicated in recent allegations about threats and harassment in an Athens taxi were not Georgia Bulldog football players, as originally reported by the man and woman who say they were targeted by four men in a cab in downtown Athens. A police report says there was one Bulldog football player in the taxi, but, police say, he "acted as a peacemaker and tried to calm the situation." The men who allegedly terrorized the couple have been identified as residents of Heard County; Police say arrest warrants are pending.

Athens-Clarke County Police say a 21 year-old man was killed in an accident on Jefferson Road. Police say Shane Chapman was riding a bicycle that was struck by a van. Chapman died after being transported to an Athens hospital. Athens police spent Sunday searching for a hit-and-run driver in another accident involving a bicycle: a rider was hit by an SUV on Peter Street. That cyclist was not seriously injured.

He says it happened at the intersection of College Avenue and Cleveland Avenue. He says the robber stole his cash, keys, and cell phone and fled on foot on Hull Street.

Athens-Clarke County Police say a man was shot in the leg on Arch Street. The victim tells police the shots were fired by two men who drove up in a blue 1996 Chevrolet Impala. Police are looking for the car, and for the shooters. The victim was treated at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Athens-Clarke County Police and the local Crimestoppers group are offering $1,000 in reward money in the search for the gunman who held up a convenience store in east Athens. The BP Foodmart on Barnett Shoals Road was the target of an attempted armed robbery just before midnight on December 5. The would-be robber, who fled without taking any cash, is described as 23 to 27 years of age, 5'8" to 5'9", 180 to 200 pounds.  Police say he wore a red bandana, red and black jacket with silver sleeves, light color shirt with writing on it, and khaki pants.

Athens-Clarke County Police and the Athens Crimestoppers group are offering $1,000 in reward money in the search for a suspect in the armed robbery of a convenience store in west Athens. The hold-up happened late Wednesday night a Golden Pantry on Tallassee Road. The store clerk tells police he was robbed at gunpoint by a black male, 6' to 6'2", 180 to 200 pounds, 18 to 24 years of age.  He wore a black stocking cap, a red, short sleeve t-shirt over a white long sleeve t-shirt, and black pants.

A former Athens-Clarke County Police officer is arrested on a forgery charge: police say Robert Houston was fired back on January for actions unrelated to the forgery allegations, which date back to July and involve the Georgia Federal Credit Union. Police say their investigation shows that Houston filed a false arrest report and used it to obtain funds from the credit union on Lumpkin Street.

Athens-Clarke County Police are searching for two suspects in a bank robbery that happened around noon today: Police say the First American Bank Branch on Hull Road was hit by a man with a gun who fled the scene in a car driven by an accomplice. Both men are described as black males; the man with the gun is described by witnesses as wearing a white stocking cap and a black hoodie. The car is described as a white older model import, possibly a Honda, last seen driving on Old Hull Road. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen in the robbery. There were no injuries reported.

Athens-Clarke County Police say two drug suspects were arrested after one of them tried to pass a counterfeit bill at a fast-food restaurant in east Athens: Tobias Patterson is 29 years old, Oscar Maxwell is 21. Both are from Athens. Police say Patterson faces a forgery charge after being caught with a bogus $20 bill, while Maxwell faces a cocaine possession charge. Maxwell and Patterson were arrested Wednesday on Gaines School Road.

The funeral for Michael Wise is set for 2 o'clock this afternoon at the New Zion Church. Athens-Clarke County Police say Wise shot and killed Kendra Borders last Thursday, then shot and killed himself. Borders was 20 years old, the mother of their three children. Michael Wise was 26.

Athens-Clarke County Police say the gunman responsible for Thursday afternon's deadly shooting of a woman whose body was found in a south Athens parking lot has shot and killed himself. Michael Wise committed suicide in a car on Veribest Road in Oglethorpe County, ending an intense manhunt that focused for a time on the University of Georgia golf course and led to the cancellation of a handful of classes at UGa. Michael Wise was 25 years old, from Athens; his victim has been identified as Kendra Borders. She was 20, also from Athens. Borders and Wise were not married, but had three children together. There is, at this point, no information on a motive for the deadly shootings. Athens-Clarke County Police continue their investigation.

Athens-Clarke County Police say the Travelers--sometimes known as the Irish Travelers--are again at work in the Athens area. Police say these scam artists are targeting elderly homeowners, typically offering one price for roofing or driveway work, then charging a much higher price when the work is finished. Police say they also change the amounts on checks that are written as payment, cashing them for higher amounts. You're asked to call police if you've been victimized by an Irish Traveler scam.

Athens-Clarke County Police are investigating a reported shooting: the victim tells police several shots were fired from a truck, shots aimed at two men outside a home in Pittard Road. There were no injuries reported, although some of the shots did strike a vehicle in the victim's driveway. It happened just after midnight this morning. The victim tells police the shots came from a black male in a white Ford extended cab pick-up truck.

Athens-Clarke County Police have now re-opened the portions of Atlanta Highway that were closed because of flooding earlier this month: heavy rainfall closed Atlanta Highway in front of the Target store and at the Oconee River Bridge near Heyward Allen Motors. Police say flooding could force more road closures through the day.

It happened just before 9 o'clock last night. The victim tells police he heard two shots from a passing vehicle. He says he also heard voices speaking Spanish. He says there were five Hispanic males in the car.

Athens Police investigate what appears to be a case of arson: they say somebody set fire to the North Avenue building that houses Young's Fashion Sportswear. Witnesses tell police they say a man with a gas can near the store shortly before the holiday weekend blaze.


Coed Claims Abduction

Police continue to investigate the report of a University of Georgia coed who says she was abducted and assaulted: the 20 year-old woman tells police she got into a car she thought was a taxi and was taken to Jackson County, where she says she was beaten. She was found by a Jackson County sheriff's deputy, partially clothed, walking along Highway 441.


Meth Arrests in Athens

An Athens-Clarke County drug task force makes methamphetamine arrests: Miguel Pedraza is 28 years old; Ana Molina is 29, both from North Bluff Road in Athens. Police say they were arrested early Thursday, charged with trafficking meth and also accused of illegal weapons possession.


Police: Woman Burned by Boyfriend

A 42 year-old Athens woman was, at last check, in critical condition in the burn unit of a hospital in Augusta. Her 49 year-old boyfriend is in the Clarke County jail, accused of dousing her with kerosene and setting her on fire. Phillip Scruggs was arrested Tuesday after the fire at the Bethel Midtown Village in Athens.


Robbers Target Mailboxes

It looks like the thieves who have been breaking into homes might be branching out: Athens Police say somebody has made the rounds in recent days, stealing checks out of mailboxes. Mailbox thefts have been reported on Barnett Shoals Road, Brookstone Drive, Arch Street, and Derby Street. Police say in each case, the thieves targeted mailboxes that had flags raised.

 

 


Police Dept Wins Reaccreditation

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has earned reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. It's the seventh time since 1987 that Athens Police have received the accreditation. It comes after a team of assessors inspected the local police department over a four-day period four months ago.

Avenue. Athens Police are trying to crack down on a recent rash of residential robberies.
